Pidyon HaBen – Garlic and Sugar

Much has been discussed regarding the custom of dispensing garlic and sugar at a Pidyon HaBen.

One of the simplest explanations I have seen (Pidyon HaBen KiHilchasah) states the following.

The Seforim write that one who participates in a Pidyon HaBen is considered to have fasted for eighty-four consecutive days (a fascinating topic in and of itself…, I hope to discuss this in a future article).

Thus, in order to allow for more people to participate in this great Seudas Mitzva, the custom is to give out two items which can be easily brought home and cooked into a dish, thereby increasing the opportunity for even more people to participate in the meal!
